The Giver Telling of Feelings Activity is a fun and interactive classroom activity that allows students to empathize with Jonas from The Giver by Lois Lowry. In the novel, families are required to participate in a ritual called The Telling of Feelings. During the ceremony, each person describes an emotion they experienced during the day and discusses it with the family. Allow your students to step into The Giver by assigning them a family within the classroom and having them participate in a simulation of The Telling of Feelings ritual.

How The Giver Telling of Feelings Activity Works:

Students will be welcomed to the Telling of Feelings activity with an eye-catching poster on your classroom door. The lesson will begin by organizing the students into groups of four, and the members will become their new “family members.” Use the teacher slideshow to guide the Telling of Feelings ritual where each person shares an emotion and is supported by the other group members. After the activity is complete, students will engage in a discussion where they consider the benefits and drawbacks of this process and connect it to The Giver.

Included in The Giver Telling of Feelings Activity:

➡️ Teacher Instructions: These detailed instructions will guide you through every element of how to successfully implement this activity in your classroom.

➡️ Classroom Poster: Welcome students with this eye-catching poster that will introduce them and hook them into the activity.

➡️ Teacher Slideshow: Use the teacher slideshow to guide the entire activity. The presentation includes discussion questions, prompts to guide the ceremony, and a list of possible emotions that the students could choose.

➡️ Feeling Cards: Students will complete this card during the ceremony with the emotion they are feeling and what triggered this emotion. They will use this card to share their feelings during the ceremony.

What Teachers Are Saying About The Giver Telling of Feelings Activity:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Students love taking part in a routine like Jonas. I liked this so much, I bought the rest of the activity bundle. I suggest going for it, it's well worth it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Used as a station in my Giver unit. Students were so interested and it connected perfectly back to the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After a few laughs and some nervous starts, the activity (which we repeated over several different days) actually went pretty deep. It goes along very well with the book, The Giver, and easily leads into a discussion between utopia (happy family?) and dystopia (control, etc.). Great resource!
